About

A small pause in a busy day.

There's an old idea that a single breath, a single moment, or a single word can be enough. The Word Bowl is built on it.

Reach in without looking and draw one word. Read what it might mean, then carry it lightly through your day — the way you might carry a smooth stone in your pocket, finding it now and then and remembering.

Nothing here predicts or prescribes. A word may mean something to you that it means to no one else. Take what's useful. Leave the rest in the bowl.

Questions

What is The Word Bowl?

A free daily practice. You draw one word from a bowl of carefully chosen words, then read its meaning, another way of seeing it, and a question to sit with. It takes a minute, and it can change the shape of a day.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It's completely free, and there's nothing to sign up for. The words you've drawn and any notes you write are saved only on your own device.

Is The Word Bowl religious?

No. Some reflections draw on ideas shared by mindfulness and contemplative traditions — presence, patience, letting go — but the bowl is for anyone, of any belief or none.

How should I use my word?

However feels right. Some people read it with their morning coffee, some write about it in a journal, some simply notice where it shows up during the day. There's no wrong way.

Can I choose a word for the year?

Yes. Many people choose one word to guide their year instead of making resolutions. Visit Find your word for the year to draw yours.

Are my notes private?

Yes. Notes and the words you've drawn are stored only in your browser. We never see them, and they never leave your device.
