Compassion
com·pas·sion
What does Compassion mean?
Feeling with someone in their suffering, and wanting to ease it. The word literally means ‘to suffer with’.
Another way of seeing Compassion
Pity looks down. Empathy feels with. Compassion takes one step further and moves towards helping. The surprising part is that compassion can be built, like a muscle — and it's often weakest exactly where it's needed most: towards difficult people, and towards ourselves.
Compassion in relationships
When someone you love is struggling, resist the rush to fix it. ‘That sounds really hard. I'm here.’ often heals more than any solution.
Compassion in everyday life
When someone irritates you today, imagine one invisible thing they might be carrying. It won't excuse everything. It might soften something — mostly in you.
Carry this with you
Everyone is carrying something you can't see.
