Discernment
dis·cern·ment
What does Discernment mean?
Knowing the difference: between urgent and important, loud and true, flattering and kind.
Another way of seeing Discernment
We're surrounded by more advice than any generation in history, and most of it isn't wrong — it just isn't yours. Discernment is the art of filtering. Not the cynic's ‘no’ to everything or the follower's ‘yes’, but a slower question: is this true for me? Often your body knows before your mind does. Notice what makes you feel bigger and what makes you feel smaller.
Discernment in relationships
Pay attention to how you feel after time with someone, not just during it. The people who leave you more like yourself are the ones worth keeping close.
Discernment in everyday life
Before you act on a headline, an opinion or a piece of advice today, ask: who benefits if I believe this? That one question will save you from a surprising amount.
Carry this with you
Not everything true is true for you.
